Homer Spit, 1982

Homer Spit, 1982

the first adventure

It was in June of 1982 and I was almost out of money.  I had heard there was free camping on the beach in Homer and with half a tank of gas and a little hope I headed south to the end of the road in Alaska.  I had quit looking for work in Anchorage and decided to try to get a job in the canneries that are clustered on the end of the Homer Spit.  The first thing to catch my eye was Jeff's white '66 Chevy Suburban with Texas plates parked on the gravely beach.  Behind it was a ragged looking cotton wall tent that sat behind a smoldering driftwood fire around which stood half dozen guys with beer bottles in their hands.  A homemade sign propped up on the rocks said "Why are we here?"  Tourists in their Motorhomes were stopping to take pictures.  That was the first adventure, that was 35 years ago.

Feature 3

Turd.

Jeff has a friend in town named Worm.  Worm is a big guy who lives alone in a small wooden house a block or two from Main Street and works for Baylor County (precinct 2) just outside of Seymour.  One day on his way home from work, Worm spots a little puppy in the ditch on the outskirts of town and brings him home.  I guess he is such a sweet little buddy that Worm decides to name him Turd.  And the name stuck. This little dog is going on the trip of a lifetime.  We all are I guess but it seems more momentous for a little dog from a Seymour Texas ditch named Turd.

  • Thanks to Vita Auto Parts for all the parts.
  • Laura and Eva, keeping the home fire lit.
